World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, raises awareness about the global water crisis and promotes sustainable water management. This year’s theme, ‘Glacier preservation’, highlights nature’s way of recycling water through four stages: evaporation, condensation, This year the theme is precipitation, and collection. Every drop of water we use today has been part of this infinite journey for billions of years.

  • Evaporation & Condensation: The Cloud Makers: The sun heats water from oceans, lakes, rivers, and soil, turning it into vapour. As this vapour rises, it cools and forms clouds—an essential step in the cycle that ensures water eventually returns to Earth. 
  • Precipitation & Collection: Water Returns to Earth: Once clouds gather enough water, precipitation occurs in the form of rain, snow, or hail. This replenishes rivers, lakes, and aquifers, which serve as crucial water sources for communities, industries, and agriculture. 
  • The Role of Glaciers: Earth’s Frozen ‘Water Towers’: Glaciers store about 70% of Earth’s fresh water. During warmer seasons, they release water downstream, keeping vital ecosystems and communities supplied. However, with climate change causing glaciers to melt faster, water availability is becoming unpredictable.
