Make sure the pump can draw in enough water and that no air enters the suction line. Air in the suction line can prevent the pump from reaching the required pressure and capacity. A centrifugal pump can draw water to a maximum depth of 8 metres - if the groundwater is deeper, a well pump must be selected.
An above-ground centrifugal pump should be drained properly in winter to help prevent freezing in the pump housing, by removing the drain plugs so the water can run out. A well pump can remain in the well, and occasional longer operation can help prevent it from sticking.
A pump can be combined with a pressurised water system or another automatic start-stop system. With a pressure switch or regulator, the pump starts when pressure falls below the set value and stops at the maximum set value. With frequency control, the set pressure is maintained across the system.
Selecting the correct pump requires knowing the required flow at a given pressure. The number of nozzles, nozzle type and sprinkler pattern determine the litres per hour needed. The pump curve table can then be used to match required pressure and litres.
For a normal garden, a self-priming jet pump is generally chosen. For a larger field or nursery with larger sprinklers, a larger centrifugal pump can be suitable. For large irrigation reels, a large well pump is often selected.
