Drip irrigation for planting areas

Rain Bird drip irrigation products apply water gradually near the base of plants. Drip tubes include small, evenly spaced openings that wet planting areas directly, which suits garden beds with plants and shrubs. Drip irrigation can also be used in areas with different configurations and more complex terrain, including slopes, when the system is planned and installed correctly.

A typical automatic irrigation system consists of a controller, solenoid valves, sprinklers, PE pipe and fittings. Rain sensors and soil moisture sensors can also be added where required.

After turning on the water supply or valve, wait a few minutes and check whether the areas around the drip lines become damp. If the drip line is underground or covered with organic matter, expose a small area of soil and check for moisture by hand.

An automatic irrigation system can water more consistently than manual operation because it is designed around site conditions and planting. Controllers, valves and sprinklers work together to apply water according to a planned schedule.

Turn off the water supply and blow air through the lines to remove remaining water before temperatures fall. Drip lines should be restarted in spring. Drain valves with suitable fittings can also be used towards the end of drip lines instead of capping them.

Soil permeability is the main factor. For drip tubes discharging at 2 lph, emitter spacing is typically 0.3 m for coarse soil, 0.4 m for medium soil and 0.5 m for finer soil.

Drip tubes discharge water more slowly than normal sprinklers. The lower application rate can reduce water usage compared with sprinkler watering, especially when water is applied close to the planting area.
