JMW Farms Ltd has invested significantly in innovation and infrastructure upgrades over the past five years to reduce its environmental impact and dependence on local resources. To support these goals, Bosta UK Ltd was commissioned to design and deliver a bespoke water treatment solution that would maximise the use of harvested rainwater while reducing reliance on mains water and borehole extraction.
The Challenge
JMW Farms already had an established rainwater harvesting system in place, but the captured water required treatment before it could be safely used across the site. The farm needed a fully automated, low-maintenance solution capable of transforming harvested rainwater into a reliable water source suitable for pig consumption, wash-down operations, and general site cleaning.
Before designing the system, it was essential to understand the quality of the harvested water. Working closely with JMW Farms, Bosta UK conducted an extensive assessment programme, including weekly laboratory testing to monitor solids, bacteria, and other contaminants. This created a comprehensive dataset that identified seasonal trends, fluctuations, and average water quality parameters.
The Solution
Following detailed water quality monitoring and laboratory analysis, Bosta UK's technical design team developed a bespoke plug-and-play rainwater treatment pump skid designed specifically for JMW Farms' operational requirements.
Using the collected data, our technical design team, supported by our environmental consultant, identified the most effective treatment processes to transform harvested rainwater into a safe and reliable water source for livestock drinking, wash-down activities, and general site cleaning.
The skid-mounted system was designed and manufactured in-house and incorporated:

Sediment Filtration
- Pre-filter: 120-micron screen with automatic backflush
- Primary filter: 5-micron disc screen with automatic backflush
Bacteria Treatment
- Medium-pressure UV disinfection system
- Hydrogen peroxide dosing system

The complete system was built on a stainless-steel frame and supplied as a fully integrated, plug-and-play solution. All treatment processes and equipment were connected to a centralised control panel, providing fully automated operation with minimal maintenance requirements.
For additional safety and system protection, the skid was equipped with, low flow, high flow and temperature alarms.
Prior to delivery, the entire system was assembled, commissioned, and factory-tested at Bosta UK's manufacturing facility in Northern Ireland to ensure optimum performance from day one.

Our demand here varies depending on drinking rates, cleaning and ad hook water requirements.
We are guaranteed rain in our part of the world and therefore harnessing the rainwater in conjunction with Bosta’s
pump filtration skid allows us now to reduce our demand on mains supply and our boreholes.
The automation of the system gives us peace of mind to undertake day-to-day work without regular stoppages and
issues.
The systems been running for 6 months now and to date we haven’t had to intervein with any elements of the filter
set in reference to maintenance.
We will look to implement Bosta’s system across our breeding sites in the coming years.”
