PE and PVC irrigation pipes for agricultural pressure systems

Plastic irrigation piping systems combine pressure pipes, connectors and agricultural pipe fittings for pressurised irrigation installations. The principal pipe choices are PE irrigation pipes and PVC irrigation pipes, supported by fittings for straight connections, changes of direction, branches, reductions and transitions to threaded connections. Matching the material, diameter, pressure rating and connection method across the installation is essential when planning new pipework or extending an existing irrigation system.

Choosing between PE and PVC irrigation pipework

Polyethylene irrigation pipe is available in straight lengths and coils. Straight PE80 pressure pipe is also offered with plain ends, while PE100 electrofusion and butt welding fittings provide further joining choices for compatible PE installations. When coils are required, compare the available PE pipes in coils with straight lengths according to the intended layout, pipe diameter and connection arrangement.

PVC irrigation pipework includes metric PVC-U pressure pipe with plain or glue socket x plain configurations. Metric ring seal pressure pipes and fittings form another connection system. Select metric PVC pressure pipe by checking the required diameter, pressure rating, length and end connection against the adjoining PVC irrigation fittings.

PE pipe fittings and compression connections

PP compression fittings provide practical connection shapes for PE irrigation pipework. Available configurations include 90° elbows, T-pieces, reducer T-pieces, sockets, reducer sockets and caps. Adaptors add female or male threaded transitions, including adaptor sockets, adaptor bushes, adaptor elbows, deck elbows and adaptor T-pieces. These irrigation pipe connectors make it possible to join equal diameters, reduce between sizes, create branches or connect compression pipework to threaded components.

Compression fittings are separated into PN10 and other compression fitting groups. Before selecting PN10 compression fittings, confirm that the stated rating, diameter and connection configuration match the PE pipe and the operating requirements of the irrigation installation. Product variants also include 16 bar PP compression fittings, but pressure ratings must be checked for each exact fitting rather than assumed across all PE irrigation fittings.

PVC pipe fittings and connection formats

Metric PVC pipe fittings include PVC-U 45° and 90° elbows, T-pieces, sockets, union couplers, reducer bushes, adaptor bushes, adaptor sockets and stub flanges. Glue socket, glue spigot, male thread and female thread configurations are available across different fittings. Review metric PVC pressure fittings when assembling PVC irrigation pipework that requires bends, branches, reductions, unions, flanged transitions or threaded equipment connections.

PVC ring seal pressure pipes and fittings provide an alternative to glue socket connections. Cast iron ring seal pressure fittings are also available for metric PE and PVC pipes. Connection formats should not be mixed without a suitable supported adaptor. Check whether each joint requires a plain end, glue socket, glue spigot, ring seal, compression connection or thread before ordering the pipe and associated fittings.

Pressure ratings and approvals

Pressure ratings vary between pipes and fittings. Examples include 10 bar PVC-U pressure pipe, 12.5 bar PE80 pressure pipe, 10 bar PP threaded fittings and PP or PVC-U fittings rated at 10 or 16 bar. The rating stated for every component should be checked individually so that the selected pipe, fitting and connector meet the requirements of the pressure irrigation pipework.

Selected PP compression fittings are marked with DVGW, KIWA, WRAS and SVGW approvals. Specific PVC-U fittings are marked KIWA or WRAS, and selected PE80 pressure pipe is marked DVGW. These markings do not apply automatically to every size or configuration. Confirm the approval stated for the exact pipe or fitting when certification forms part of the project specification.

Planning compatible agricultural irrigation pipe systems

Start with the pipe material and outside diameter, then identify the joint needed at each point in the layout. Use elbows for changes of direction, T-pieces for branches, sockets for straight connections and reducers where diameters change. Adaptors connect compression or glue socket pipework to male or female threads, while caps and plugs close compatible pipe or threaded ends. PP saddles for PE and PVC pipes provide another supported fitting group for pipe connections.

For welded PE installations, compare PE100 electrofusion and butt welding fittings with the specified PE pipe system and joining method. For ring seal installations, keep the pipe and fitting connection format consistent. A final compatibility check should cover material, metric dimensions, pressure rating, connection type, required approval and the configuration of every adjoining pipe or fitting.
